Batman Arkham Asylum 2 Preview: Return of the Caped Crusader

Ah, this post brings back nostalgia. My ENTIRE life I have been a die-hard Batman fan. I collected Batman action figures, comics, costumes, movies and dvd's. So another words, anything Batman and I'm all about it. Last year I waited..waited....and waited some more for Rocksteady Studios Batman: Arkahm Asylum to be released (it was pushed back a few times). When it finally did come out in August, I bought the Collectors Edition and was hooked from the moment I put the disk in my Xbox. To save us all some time (because I could go on for days). Arkham Asylum was one of the BEST gaming experiences I've ever played. Rocksteady completely immerses you into the world of Batman with the story, characters and gameplay. Mark Hamill as The Joker and Kevin Conroy as Batman deliver stunning voice acting performances. As you can imagine, when I saw the Akham Asylum 2 trailer at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards I was happier than a fat kid at McDonald's.

Arkham 2 continues directly after Akrham 1. Batman just had the roughest night of his life and now he's got even more problems to attend to. The trailer starts off showing the gates of Arkham Asylum, but the camera continues into the city streets of Gotham. However, this is no "beautiful day in the neighborhood." Gotham looks more like a post-apocalyptic wasteland rather than a flourishing city. You quickly notice the streets filled with Jokers "goons" who are beating up citizens, setting cars on fire and trashing the city in any way they can. The camera goes around a broken down building and we see the Iceberg Lounge, the popular nightclub and hangout spot of one of Batman's nemesis' The Penguin. Right before we are taken into a demolished warehouse we see a poster on the side of the building that looks like a campaign advertisement for Harvey Dent (Two-Face). As we enter the run-down establishment we see it has The Joker written all over it. A clown mask falls in front of the camera and the slow-menacing tune kicks in. We see what looks to be like an amusement park ride with a dead body in it's seat coming to an abrupt hault. Then, the most infamous laugh imaginable is heard and we quickly are swept into a room overlooking Gotham City. We see Harley Quinn approaching an armchair with an oxygen tank on the left side of it. The camera swings around and we see The Joker laughing hysterically and flailing his arms around in the air. He looks bruised and battered (from the ending events of Arkham Aylum 1) as he coughs and snickers. Then in an instant the Batman Logo (pictured above) is seen crumbling into pieces. WOW.

So what does this mean for Arkham 2? Well first things first, the game will not be for the faint of heart. Kevin Conroy was quoted saying "Batman Arkham Asylum 2 will be really, really dark." This looks like it will be an even tougher night for Batman. Instead of fighting Gotham City's "supervillians" in a closed environment (Arkham), he now has to apprehend them throughout the entire city. It's safe to say this sequel will have an elaborate plot and amazing voice acting to go along with it. Not to mention the KICK-ASS gameplay that allowed you to take on numerous villians at once. Rocksteady's Batman Arkham Asylum 2 has all the key elements of being EVEN BETTER than its predecessor. Some confirmed new characters include Mr. Freeze, Talia al Ghul and Two Face. Could we see Catwoman, Robin, Ra's al Ghul or maybe The Ridler? It's all speculation now, but E3 this year should give us plenty of more info on the Dark Knight and his new adventure. Until then sit tight and check back here for any new information.
