Summer 2010 Hip-Hop/R&B Album Previews: Toronto Stand Up!

Allow me to start off by saying WOW. Summer 2010 has all the making of being a historic season for the Rap and R&B music genre. In the next three months albums will be released (as of May 10th, assuming they won't be pushed back) by some of the biggest artists in the game. Veterans such as T.I., Young Jeezy, The Game, The-Dream, Kevin Rudolf, Taio Cruz, Eminem and Chamillionaire all plan to return to the spotlight. All of their albums are highly anticipated, as us the fans IMPATIENTLY wait on their releases. That being said there is one artist who has taken the game by storm, Drake.

Drake started off acting in Toronto on the show Degrassi: The Next Generation, but quickly realized his love for Rap music. He exploded onto the scene in 2006 with his mixtape Room for Improvement and again in 2007 with Comeback Season. Both mixtapes were praised and he quickly drew attention from the industry. Then in 2009 Drake released So Far Gone and the rest is history. The mixtape was a hit, even coming from Drake in his own words "Dropped The Mixtape That Shit Sounded Like An Album, Who'da Thought A Country Wide Tour Would Be The Outcome" (Forever). It received numerous awards including MTV's 2009 hottest mixtape of the year. His first single "Best I Ever Had" exploded on blog's, the radio, and television and even was named "Hot Rap Song" of the year by Billboard magazine. With numerous singles, videos, concerts and appearances in other hit songs, not to mention putting the media in a frenzy. We arrive at the moment we've all been waiting for; his first studio album Thank me Later is set to be released on June 15. If your anything like myself and fellow Dpad blogger Justin Weakley seeing a set release date is like a dream come true. The album has been pushed back what seems like 1,000,000,000 times and caused myself and Justin countless days of frustration and anger as we see the album is yet again DELAYED.

Now we can all give a big sign of relief as Drake has finally set the record straight as to when the CD will come out. For us, this record is more than just another Hip-Hop album. Every track Drake jumps on turns to gold. From countless underground singles to mainstream bangers Drizzy does exactly what he says "WOW, Ok I'm Killin Shit, I'm Killin Shit" (King Leon). Thank Me Later has the potential to be, yes I'm saying it now everyone quote me, THE BEST RAP ALBUM EVER MADE. With top producers such as Boi-1da, Noah "40" Shebib, Kanye West and others making the beats, while Drake being the most lyrically talented artist in the game on every song, not to mention the countless star cameos to appear on the album such as his fellow Cash Money Member Lil Wayne, we can expect some INSANE tracks. "Over" and "Find Your Love" are already released on iTunes and are AMAZING to say the least, while "Shut It Down" delivers as a killer slow jam.

I already know I'll have Thank Me Later set to repeat on my iPod and blaring out of my car stereo system cruzin down the street. It's safe to say I cannot wait for this album to drop. Check back here again for an album review song-by-song when the record is released. "Thank Me Later First Week I'm Taking All Bets, Because A Million Copies Really Isn't Far-fetched." I feel you Drake.
