Yesterday Sony released their financial results for the 2009 fiscal year (April 1st 2009-March 31st of this year). Sony Computer Entertainment's sales fell by 10%. The company blames the Vaio computers and the PlayStation Portable for the loss. The PSP went from 14.1 million units sold in 2008 to just 9.9 million in 2009. That's a significant loss for anyone in the industry. This financial trouble occurred despite the release of the PSP Go (what was Sony thinking making a PSP without UMD support we'll never know). Despite this bad news for Sony, the PS3 made great strides in sales this year. In 2008 the PS3 sold 10.1 million consoles and in 2009 sold 13 million (15 million projected to be sold in 2010). This increase in sales could be caused by Sony's stellar PS3 exclusive games. Still on the market (somehow) the PS2 sold 7.3 million units in the 2009 fiscal year.
Sony will look to increase sales on the PSP system (or make a whole new PSP console) to improve overall sales. The PSP has one huge title coming out, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (see our preview) to hopefully increase some sales for the system.
